The Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum will again host a 1941 Waco UPF-7 open-cockpit biplane available for flights around the St. Louis area this summer. The aircraft, flown by Mr. Kevin Kegin for St. Louis Biplane Rides, is based at Ideal Aviation at St. Louis Downtown Airport and will be available frequently at nearby historic Curtiss-Wright Hangar 2 in front of the museum. The Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum was honored tonight at the annual AIAA St. Louis Section Honors and Awards Banquet held at the Engineers Club of St. Louis. The museum was presented with the Civic Service Award in recognition of its work preserving St. Louis aerospace history and promoting aerospace education to this generation of youth. Mark Nankivil, President of the Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum, accepted the award and thanked all who contributed to the museum’s success. Among the other award recipients was Dr. Frederick Roos, museum Life Member, who received the Section Service Award. Guest speaker for the banquet was Dr. Marco Villa, Director of Mission Operations, Space Exploration Technologies Group at SpaceX. Congratulations to the Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum and Dr. Frederick Roos for being honored by the AIAA St. Louis Section.

The Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum received a collection of limited edition prints depicting the McDonnell Aircraft RF-101C Voodoo flown by then U.S. Air Force Captain Ray Schrecengost on “Operation Sun-Run,” a successful bid to establish three transcontinental speed records. The prints were presented Tuesday to the museum by Mr. Ed and Cynthia (Schrecengost) Miller and were immediately placed on display in the Jet and Space Age Gallery. Captain (later Colonel) Schrecengost was the first crew to take off at 6:59am November 27, 1957 on his run from Los Angeles to New York and back to Los Angeles. Altogether, six crewmen, four primary and two backup, were chosen from the 17th and 18th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadrons of the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. They broke three transcontinental speed records, using 26 aerial refueling hookups from the new Boeing KC-135 tankers to avoid landing for fuel along the way. The prints can be viewed this weekend at the museum just in time for the 55th anniversary of the F-4 Phantom II first flight on May 27, 1958, six months after the “Operation Sun-Run” flights.

The Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum participated in two programs promoting aviation and transportation in the St. Louis area. On Friday, the museum presented the F-4 Phantom II cockpit at the “Careers on the Move” program at J.L Mudd Elementary School in O’Fallon, MO. About 400 elementary school children were introduced to various modes of transportation, including a police car, fire engine, construction equipment, limousine, a Bell Long Ranger from Air Evac Life Team and the museum’s jet fighter cockpit. The cockpit is on long-term loan to the museum by Mr. Joe Steimann, who brought the cockpit to the school along with museum Board Member Carmelo Turdo. Most of the children were able to sit in the cockpit and for a moment become fighter aces.
On Saturday, the museum participated in the Cessna Aircraft Demo Day at Air Associates of Missouri, located at Spirit of St. Louis Airport. Information about the museum, including its location, exhibits and upcoming events was available, along with model airplanes provided for children. Museum Board Member Carmelo Turdo was on hand to encourage attendees to visit the museum and participate in museum programs. Cessna Demo Day is an annual event held at Air Associates of Missouri to showcase the pilot training and aircraft services available at its Spirit of St. Louis location.
Just Announced – Museum to Receive St. Louis AIAA Civic Service Award!
The Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum has been chosen to receive the 2013 St. Louis American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Civic Service Award. The award, to be presented at the annual awards dinner on May 23, recognizes the Museum’s work in the preservation of historic aviation and space artifacts and for promoting the spirit of flight in the next generation. Museum President, Mark Nankivil, was quick to credit all who have worked at and with the Museum throughout its three decades, “Congratulations to our Museum team and to those of you who have supported us through the years. This award represents the efforts of all of you!” More details on the award and the ceremony will be featured in a future post.
The Greater St. Louis Air & Space Museum will unveil on Monday the restored McDonnell Aircraft factory cart used by company Board Chairman and CEO James S. McDonnell to drive President John F. Kennedy around during his visit in 1962. The cart will be dedicated May 6 at a ceremony held at the Museum, located at historic Curtiss-Wright Hangar 2 at St. Louis Downtown Airport. It has been a part of the Museum collection for over 20 years, and has been on display there and at the St. Louis Science Center. The cart was caught in the floods of 1993 when the Museum was located at Spirit of St. Louis Airport, and was later cleaned and again displayed. The 2013 comprehensive restoration, funded by the Boeing Employees Community Fund, was completed by North Town Auto Body in Collinsville, IL along with: tires, tubes and battery from Master Auto Care; battery cables from O’Reilly Auto Parts; keys from Village Locksmith in Collinsville, IL. The Museum thanks everyone involved in the restoration process, including Museum members Trent Duff, Doug Bent, and Rick Rehg for leading this project.
